The howls moving castle movie11/8/2022 This is why it's worth regarding the film as based loosely on the book rather than as a mere animated version of it. "The thing about these Japanese animated adaptations, it seems to me, is that they take their lead from the characters and ideas in the novels and then freely riff on them. Sophie also meets Markl (Josh Hutcherson), Howls aide-de-camp, and sets about appointing herself the castles housekeeper and maid of all work. So is his key assistant Calcifer (Billy Crystal), a fiery being whose job is to supply the castles energy. I don't, however, recall much about flying in Jones' book. Howl is the real thing, a shape-shifter who sometimes becomes a winged bird of prey. "His family's involvement in aircraft manufacture also seems to account for his obsession with flying, seen strongly in pretty much all the films of his I've seen, such as Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbour Totoro, and very obviously in Howl's Moving Castle. In particular, the director's viewpoint on the horror of war dominates the feel of the end of the film, especially all that carpet bombing (Miyazaki was born four years before the end of the Second World War and the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki would be strong in his memories, not to mention the collective memory of his generation). In it I agreed that "there is a lot that is very different in the movie version. I've posted this already in another thread, but it may be worth repeating here.
